Born in a rented farmhouse in hardscrabble rural Minnesota, Melvin spends his first 25 years on rental farms through dust storms, drought, the Great Depression and a World War. Milking cows from age six, he learns to work. He thirsts for the education that his father thinks is unnecessary beyond the 8th grade. Melvin grows into adulthood fast. He marries and fathers 12 children, each of whom enjoys post-secondary education and are respectable citizens. Melvin’s business careers lead to owning his own businesses, which thrive in small town America through customer sense and practical business moxie. He becomes a town father. A near smart-ass of good German stock, Melvin still laughs daily at the age of 93.
