During his early years in Tennessee, Sean O’Rourke acquires the life skills that will keep him alive later in life. From his parents, he learns the importance of hard work and good manners as well as how to fight, shoot, and when to do so. He also learns that some people are truly evil and must be dealt with appropriately. At an early age, he is forced to become a killer for the common good. As a young man, he must kill so his family can survive. After leaving Tennessee, he learns to deal with more killing and death, and develops a great love for his new family, the Cheyenne. As a Union soldier, he doesn't quite understand why the slaughter goes on and on, even when things seem hopeless. As a lawman, hew finds that there is almost an endless supply of outlaws who have no respect for anything except the gun.
