*except in the case of multiple books being brought to us at the same time,
but that’s for another blog post.
I received emails from authors the other day that read:
“Does Telemachus Press offer a discount if I’ve already designed my cover?” and “I’m having a graphic artist prepare my cover. Do you reduce your fee because of this?”
And another email that said:
“I’ve formatted my book already. All Telemachus Press has to do is upload it. Will you offer a discounted price?”
And still another:
“Can you format my book and I’ll open the accounts and upload it?”
The answers are:
No, we will not offer a discount if the author comes to us with a cover already designed. This is true whether the author designed it himself or had a professional graphic artist design it.
No, we will not offer a discount if the book is formatted and all we have to do is upload it.
No, we will not format an author’s book so she can open the accounts and upload it on her own.
Let me explain:
Steve Jackson and Steve Himes, the partners of TP, spent an inordinate amount of time developing a business plan that is geared toward achieving some very specific goals. Before even beginning TP, they self published a book to actually live through the process so they would know what it was like from the author’s perspective. They worked and reworked the process until they came up with a business model designed to prepare the best books possible for our authors
Let’s break this down:
Why TP does not offer a discount if the author provides the cover art
Regardless of the cover art the author or his artist has prepared, our graphic artists will still size the cover, make sure the specs are correct, improve and enhance the color, perfect the lettering and more. Cover art that is supplied by an author is not a square peg being inserted into a square hole. Rather, it’s a square peg that needs to be sanded, cajoled and modified before it will fit into the round hole. This is so we prepare the best books possible for our authors.
Why TP does not offer a discount if the manuscript is already formatted
We have many steps we go through in the formatting process. Even if an author formats the manuscript herself, we still go through each and every step. This is so we prepare the best books possible for our authors.
Why TP opens the accounts and uploads
We open all the accounts and upload for our authors. Once the book is available for purchase on all platforms, then we hand over the reigns to the author. This is part of TP preparing the best books possible for our authors.
